Berkeley’s Faith
In Berkeley’s dialogue, he has the idea that everything that we as human beings know in
life is derived from the senses. In this paper I will discuss Berkeley’s arguments for common
sense and God. I will then describe why his argument is contradicting to his beliefs, as well as
how his ideas fit into our perception of God today.
Berkeley is assuming that what we all know in life comes from our own senses, as well as
the fact that everything sensible to us is immediately perceived. A good example of Berkeley’s
belief in sensible things is by looking at a book and seeing letters on a page rather than looking at
a book and seeing what each letter stands for. Language plays a big role in Berkeley’s
epistemology as a link between people. This can be seen in the following consideration: no two
people have exactly the same sense data because no two people can share exactly the same
geometrical perspective on any object. If thirty people in a room look at a book on a table, each
has a slightly different datum in consciousn
