How Old Should We Really Be?
Currently in our American society, the age that enables us to consume alcoholic beverages is twenty-one. Many United States citizens disagree with this age. Many believe that the age to legally be able to purchase, consume or possess alcohol should be eighteen. A United States Citizen is allowed to vote when they are eighteen years of age and eighteen year old males are forced to join the Selective Service, for possible drafting, enabling them to go to war at any time. At age eighteen, a citizen is also inclined to jury duty. So, eighteen year old citizens are considered adults in the world and given many responsibilities and privileges. If an eighteen year old citizen is to be given these responsibilities, why is the legal drinking age twenty-one? Does the U.S. Government not trust those of us under twenty-one? They trust us with their votes, yet they cannot treat us like full adults for another three years! First, it is necessary to question this law. Why is twenty-one the “magical” age that makes one intelligent and mature enough to consume alcohol? Sure, some adults and teenagers abuse alcohol, but some teenagers in this very room would be perfectly able to drink responsibly. Why not eighteen, or perhaps thirty-five or t
