At this part in the novel all the characters’ actions lead up to an event or problem that could arise and lead into a deeper look into that character. In this part the main characters are Briony, Cecilia, and Robbie. The main focus is on Briony and her new experiences at the ward, and the issues that she is still bewildered by – the false statement in court, that day of infamy – that could have made the future unavailable. The saddest part of it is that although Briony did cause all the anguish and the uncertainty, she will forever have to live with it that she caused the problems and that her sister will never talk to her the way she did; especially when Briony feels so sorry and is extraordinarily apologetic. Even though Cecilia was in fact not the kindest of sisters, she loved her sister, and I think that this is the first time that it is even hard for Cecilia to not forgive her. “I won’t ever forgive you” (318). Cecilia saying this shows that although they are sisters, she made everything harder for her and Robbie and made the dream like state of happiness now an Unavailable Future.
