Legalisation of euthanasia – right or wrong
The word euthanasia is originally a Greek word meaning roughly good death. Essentially, that is what this is all about, being able to decide for yourself when and how to die (emphasis on when). Does it, with their consent, imply the deliberate killing of dependent human beings in hospitals and nursing homes? Yes, it does, but we do not have a moral obligation to live, do we? No one can tell me what to do with my life, and if I were able to choose between dying serenely instead of waiting for the grim reaper and dying of asphyxiation, that should be nobody’s business but mine. In my opinion that is enough to justify legislation in Sweden.
Did you know that there are only three locations in the world where euthanasia and assisted suicide are legal? No? It came as a surprise to me too, actually. The three places are: the state of Oregon in the US, the Netherlands and Belgium. Thousands of people every year seek help in these three countries.
Let me enlighten you with a couple of expressions with reference to euthanasia:
Voluntary euthanasia: When the person who is killed has requested to be killed. Non-voluntary: When the person who is killed made no request and gave no permis
