The Prince
The Prince, by Niccolo Machiavelli, tells how a prince should behave in order to be successful. The author gives a detailed description on the many aspects of ruling a country. One main theme that is repeated throughout The Prince is whether not a prince should be feared or loved. Throughout history rulers have been feared and loved, and understanding the pros and cons of each could improve the ruler’s ability to govern.
Many rulers have had success with being cruel. Cesare Borgia was known as a cruel ruler, but he was successful in restoring order to his country. He united Romagna and brought order and obedience to its people. In a way Borgia was not cruel, but very much a merciful man.
