Violation of Social Norms
Violation of a Social Norm
Typical Social Norm Theory
On most college campus’ it is safe to say that if students perceive something
to be the norm, they tend to alter their behavior to fit that norm, even if it isn't
reality. So if students think that heavy drinking is normal, they'll drink more. If they
think responsible drinking is normal, they'll drink more responsibly.
This is a basic outline for most of the social norms we deal with on a daily
basis. What ever we think is “normal”, we do it. What ever we think is “not
normal”, we don’t do it. Norms are standards or guides for behavior. Norms specify
certain behavioral expectations by defining what are correct and incorrect ways of
responding to different situations.
