Senior Season
My Senior Season
Centerville football has always had a long and rich tradition of dominating the gridiron. For over thirty years Centerville was the team every team in the area wanted to beat. For one, because we were the so-called “rich kinds”, and second because losses were something that the football team seldom experienced. That is until my senior year. We produced the worst record in over thirty years. Before my senior year a bad team at least won seven out of ten games. But in our case, we went 3-7. I know that if you played on a team that bad, you need to find some reason to justify to yourself and others why the season was so grim. We had little experience, a plague of injuries, and a new head coach.
When it comes down to it, football is not just a game of brute strength; it is also a matter of execution. Players who have been seasoned year after year in the art of playing football best carry out execution. Such as the retired John Elway, there should have been no way in the final stages of his career he should have been able to compete with men almost half his age. What kept him dominating the game was his experience in execution. Going into my final season we only had six returning starters and a handful of letterm
