Streetcar Named Desire

    Most people have heard the phrase “honesty is the best policy”. The play A Streetcar Named Desire illustrates this phrase through the experiences of Blanche Dubois. Throughout the entire play, Blanche DuBois is completely dishonest with the rest of the characters. She is ultimately committed to a mental institution. Blanche’s dishonesty and other mental and emotional problems became so severe that Stanley and Stella had no choice but to commit her. Blanche is obviously very insecure about herself. Hiding your true physical self is a form of dishonesty, which Blanche strives to do the entire play. She avoids standing in well-lit areas to hide herself, despite the fact that she is a good-looking woman. When talking to Mitch for the first time, Blanche says, “I bought this little colored paper lantern at a Chinese shop on Bourbon. Put it over the light bulb! Will you, please” (55). Blanche feels uncomfortable with her looks and feels that she must hide them from other people. Also, she never divulges to her own age because she is so insecure about it. She sees herself as
