Hazing Needs to End
According to the FIPG (Fraternity Insurance Purchasing Group), hazing is defined as “any action taken or situation created, intentionally, whether on or off fraternity premises, to produce mental of physical discomfort, embarrassment, or ridicule.” Since hazing has been part of the requirements of joining many different clubs and organizations, it has always been an activity involving an amount of secrecy. Many people see hazing as a part of bonding, but the effects on the victims can sometimes be detrimental to their self-esteem and confidence levels. In addition, these activities have also been noted to result in injury and even death on occasion. Because of the dangerous path hazing has taken, especially in recent years, this activity must be stopped before more incidents occur (StopHazing.org).
Hazing occurs in many groups, but none are as common as in fraternities. Members believe that the humiliations build bonds between the current brothers and the incoming pledges. The theory is that when several people go through the acts together, they are given something in common with each other bringing them together. Many of the hazing events occur without the knowledge of college administrators. A
