The Essence of Art
Truly what is art? Does art consist solely of paintings hung on walls and sculptures made out of stone? Is there actually such a thing as art, or on the other hand is everything art? All of these questions and more have been debated by philosophers and artists alike for centuries and still society has no true consensus as to what truly is a piece of art work or what is considered good and bad art. In addition one must ask oneself; I like it, but is it art? Whether or not a person enjoys a piece of art has to do with that person’s individual taste. Over the centuries the matter of taste has been debated extensively and still there is no clear consensus or consent as to what makes a great piece of art work. However, the ultimate question of art is not only what art is but also what is its purpose, function, and importance in life. It is my belief that if a person likes a piece of work and is moved by or even draws pleasure out of it then, yes, it is art and nobody can, or should try to tell them differently.
