The Wave
57 mph down familiar Santa Monica freeway, dark and deserted at this hour, just five miles from home. The world outside stands still, almost frozen in the bitter January air. Inside the car I relax to the music playing on the radio. Over the low volume of the music, the only other sound is the violent hum of the heater on full blast. Beside me, my best friend flips through a CD case using a mini flashlight for light and in the back seat, my other best friend leans to the side with her hand pressed against the window and her cheek against her hand. Our night out in Kearney was fun, but with the fun long over, nothing sounds better than going home. I look at the clock just in time to see it change, 2:03AM.
Seconds pass and in the midst of being lost in thought; I am startled to be blinded by a reflection in my mirrors. I squint into the brightness seeing two headlights only feet from my bumper. Looking back at the road, my vision is spotty and I am irritated at the careless driver behind me. I adjust my mirrors and ignore the lights. A little time passes and I am curious as to why this car is not passing me. I comment to my friends that surely this is someone we know going to our town as well.
