Stars of Hollywood
Bill Condon’s, “Gods and Monsters” is a film about the last days of the director James Whale (Ian McKellen), who was open about his homosexuality in expressing it to his handsome yard man Clayton Boone (Brendan Fraser). Clayton was slow in understanding that Whale was gay, but all Whale needed to do was talk, which was what Boone lets him do. Billy Wilder’s, “Sunset Boulevard” uniquely had a lot in common with “Gods and Monsters” on the aspects of the history of Hollywood. Sunset Boulevard, is set in the 1950’s, and is about Norma Desmond’s (Gloria Swanson) obsession with herself as she attempts to “adjust to the new Hollywood that is not the one she remembers.” (AOF, p162). Although some were obvious and others were hidden, both films had a lot in common.
