Oliver Cromwell
Oliver Cromwell is a very detrimental character in English history. Cromwell wished to bring religious freedom, a strong central military leadership, and a true constitutional government. On the other hand he confused the already uneasy and vague ideals of sovereignty, Cromwell had a handpicked parliament that couldn’t get anything done and he tried to influence public life too much.
England was experiencing a very tumultuous time. Charles I placed levies on people and the parliament were extremely upset over the taxation without consent. One Commons member , by the name of Oliver Cromwell persistently bugged and urged the Parliament to take away the Book of Common Prayer. Cromwell caustically chastised the bishops of the Anglican Church. This resulted in the impeachment of the Archbishop Laud.
Within the following year after Lauds impeachment the House of Commons issued a restatement of the parliaments role and the laws it had placed into effect. This was known as the Grand Remonstrance. During this Tim & Frame the parliament refused to back to King financially for defense. The king attempted to arrest leaders of the commons. In 1642 of June the commons gave a set of demands to the king to gain control of the army, church
