Verdi
Verdi’s La Traviata is a tragic story of a woman, Violetta, and her lover, Alfredo. Act I opens on a party that Violetta is having to reintroduce herself to society after a long battle with illness. It is at this party that Violetta is introduced to Alfredo, who professes his undying love for her. The act ends with Violetta, although she feels that Alfredo is a man that she could genuinely love, but deciding that she wants freedom instead.
Act II, Scene I takes place a few months later. Violetta has given up her “freedom” and is living contentedly in her country house with Alfredo. When the maid, Annina, informs Alfredo that in order to keep the house, Violetta has been selling her jewels, Alfredo rushes off to Paris to make money. In his absence, Giorgio Germont, Alfredo’s father, shows up and demands that she leave Alfredo, because the news of their affair has seemingly threatened the engagement of Alfredo’s sister.
