The Four Elements of Hip-Hop
Hip-Hop is a successful culture that is well known across the world. Hip-Hop culture is made up of music, dance, art, poetry, language, and fashion. Its originators were inner city youths who needed to express themselves. Hip-Hop is now a multi-billion dollor industry that is recognized arpund the world, but is composed of four components. The four components are: deejaying, emceeing, breaking, and writing, these are known as the four elements of Hip-Hop.
Hip-Hop deejaying, scratching, or turntablism, is a complex art. Though in its simplest form it consisits of a pair of turntables, an audio mixer, and some orginal recordings. Through the use of deejaying techniques cutting, mixing, scratching, and sampling are used to create a new track from the original song. Deejaying origins are found throughout Jamaica in the 1950's and 1960's. This was a very innovative time for deejays. During this time the after beat, the rock steady beat, ska, dub, and reggae a;; were deleveloped during this time. In 1968 King Tubby created the Dub style by removing parts of the vocal track on the dub plate or acetate disc. This created a new version of the song that by todays standards would be known as a remix. Throughout the 196
