Disrespect
When I found out that I was going to write a paper on my family and our culture, it never struck me that I would be looking into their past. Never before have I pondered their past, nor even ask about how they got here. All I knew was that they grew up having a difficult time learning the American ways and adjusting to them. At first I was afraid to even ask, so I called my sisters and asked them about my parents past. They knew nothing, and so then I knew I was going to have to go in head first. My parents are not big talkers, and even worse they do not like talking about their past. When I asked they kept calling me, Metiche, which means nosy, but I insisted. Eventually, I was able to scrape some of it out, and this is what I got.
When I began to interview my father I knew it would be hard for him at times. He is a man who never shows any emotions, but once you have him open he is like the most emotional man you can ever meet. A tear shed his eye when I asked about his father. He would quickly ask my mother to see if she knew the answers to questions that I would ask about his childhood, but of course she didn’t. My father does not remember his father at all. All he is aware of is his name.
