    Charles A. Eastman had many trials and tribulations in dealing with civilization as a young Sioux. He often time fought to avoid giving into the white man. He was brought up as a wild native, and was not about to succumb to the demands of civilization. His close family did not want Charles to see the persecution of their people, so they moved to Canada. It was not until his father came back into the picture, years later did he realize that all his father wanted for him, was a “white education.” As a child Eastman saw how badly his people were being persecuted by the white man and did not want to give them any satisfaction. He did not want to be a civilized Indian, he wanted to stay wild and remain how he was accustomed (religion, hunting, etc).
