My first car wreck
According to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 710 persons were killed in various road accidents in Lagos between January and November last year. This is the story of how I was almost added to these statistics.
I had never been involved in a car wreck before. I had only seen it on TV and heard a couple of stories from my friends about their personal experiences, but
I never thought it could ever happen to me. My dad had told me several times that no matter how good a driver you are, hope and pray that you’re never in the wrong place at the wrong time. I didn’t really think of what he said until last fall.
It was a rainy Sunday morning in Lagos, Nigeria. It was cold, damp and dark. My dad and I were on our way back home from church when we stopped at a red light. All of a sudden, we heard a loud crashing sound and it sounded a lot like something had hit us, so we got out of the car to see what was wrong. To our shock, there was a man at the back of the car. There was a huge dent on the trunk and the man was lying on the ground next to a motorbike. His hands were bruised and he looked like he had lost consciousness and he was lying face down.
