Analysis of
Analysis of "Dover Beach", "The Seconc Coming", Piano, and "Mr. Flood's Party"
In “Dover Beach”, Arnold uses the sea to project the human feelings of sadness. The past was a happier time. The reader senses that the present is not a favorable time for the subject of the poem. When he talks of the waves drawing the pebbles back and then flinging them, he is referring to his feelings of sadness. When he speaks of the ebb and flow of the tide, he is saying that there are no certainties in life. What is now may not always be. No matter where you are in your life, things could get better or worse. In the fourth stanza, he is searching for truth. He says that you should be true to yourself. The present experiences highs and lows, but the future is in your own hands. Change is the only thing that is permanent. You can’t change everything, so deal with it. Be true to yourself!
