The Single Sport Athelete
The single sport athlete has more skill, talent, strength and a higher risk of injury plus the year-round commitment and traveling around the country for more and intensified competition is isolating our youth from their friends, families and communities. There are over seven million high school boys and girls that participate in over 50 different athletic activities. The youth today have every athletic resource at their disposal for every sport imaginable, from state of the art weight training facilities to hoards of coaches and assistant coaches to a schedule of games and practices that fill the calendar year. This enables them to excel to the desired level of play. As coaches demand year-round proof of dedication, kids spend a greater and greater proportion of time practicing rather than playing, and many state high school federations, which once enforced strict rules on summer activity, throw up their hands, sometimes eliminating those rules altogether ( Wolff 74 ).
