Desirees Baby
Interpretation of Literature
Midterm
2. The short story Desiree’s Baby by Kate Chopin is told using the slave
settings of the 1800s. A time when the blacks took care of the farming and
tended to the white folks needs. In this particular story it was a rich well
known couple who had fallen in love and married. The plot begins by a
family taking in a found baby and raising it. The girl turns into a beautiful
woman and catches the eye of a well to do man whom was educated in Paris.
Although she does not have a known surname he marries her anyway. They
then have a child, which causes the conflict in the story. The child is of
African American decent and the husband becomes angry and wants nothing
to do with the child or wife because he believes that she is of such decent.
The conflict now is his love for her or the greatness of his family name and
the white kind. He chooses the pride of himself. Which plays into the plot
which now makes the girl call to her only known mother
