Investigating the Effect Off Different Concentrations of Sal
Investigating the effect off different concentrations of salt solution on osmosis in chips.
Osmosis is the diffusion of water particles. In this case the osmosis-taking place was varying concentrations of salt water passing through a semi permeable membrane of a plant cell (potato). This semi permeable membrane allows only certain particles to pass through it and effectively selects which particle passes through it. Smaller molecules like water can easily pass through the membrane of a plant cell, but larger molecules like sugars and starches cannot. For this experiment to take place, raw potato was needed because if it was cooked, the heat would have denatured the cells and osmosis would not occur. The reasoning behind using a plant cell is that all plant cells have a cell wall and animal cells do not, therefore if an animal cell was to absorb large amounts of water it would burst!
Preliminary Investigations: This experiment will work as a preliminary experiment as it allows me to determine the rough isotonic point of the potato in the water. Then I will further the investigation by using a smaller range of concentrations to find the exact isotonic point. I also did a preliminary experiment
