The Media's Influence in the Court Room for Sports Figures
Kobe Bryant was arrested by Eagle County Police and was charged with one count of sexual assault against a 19 year old woman for his actions on June 30, 2003. Since that time a flurry of media has surrounded the case giving it primetime attention throughout the country. The current question of debate posed both to the judge and society is whether or not media, specifically television, should be allowed inside the courtroom. There have been many other high-profile cases such as the O.J. Simpson trial and the Scott Peterson trial were the media has paid special attention to the proceedings. In both of these cases there were advantages and disadvantages to having the media present during the trial. The Kobe Bryant trial has the benefit of learning from these previous trials and should not allow the media to be present in the courtroom so that the trial is fair for both parties involved.
There are numerous drawbacks of allowing cameras to be present in the courtroom. The first, and most important, is the tainting of the jury pool.
