Heaven Can Wait
The guitar player slowly strummed his guitar to the tune of Eric Clapton’s song “Tears in Heaven.” I looked around the pew-filled chapel and saw the tears forming in the eyes of familiar faces as I too wiped away my tears trying to be inconspicuous. I was a little surprised to see that my mom was taking it harder than me. I remember her turning to me and saying, “It’s not right for parents to outlive their children,” between her constant sobs. I’ll never forget that day back home in Merizo, Guam as I listened to the eulogy of my classmate and friend, Tommy.
Looking back in time, I remember sitting there in church, asking God why he let Tommy and three other students die. Tommy at fourteen years, was the youngest of the four killed in the automobile crash. I remember waking up for school the morning after the accident and my mom came running to my room to tell me to listen to the radio. The news had just reported about the tragic accident that occurred in Merizo the night before, killing four minors. I listened intently but the news reporter wasn’t able to release the names yet or give details of the accident.
