Auteur Cinema Essay: "The Godfather"
While seeking a glimpse into the human psyche of the chief in a mob family, and using his imagination to recreate those mental images in a tangible form, Mario Puzo wrote The Godfather. Directed by Francis Ford Coppola, The Godfather unfolds itself to us entirely through the characters in the film. However hard the ability to sympathize with the roles of the characters seem to be the story is told to us from a closed world, and this is why in some cases it is somewhat inevitable. As we grow with the family, the mafia lifestyle is nearly inviting as a way of life (“The Godfather” James Berardinelli).
The Godfather stresses the importance of loyalty within the family. Trust in a man's word is regarded to as one of the most important aspects in the film. However with the common likes of betrayal, compared to loyalty honesty is nothing (”Keeping up with the Corleones”, William S. Pechter). No matter how shameful a person you become when you go against your word and grow to be known as a "rat" or a "snitch", most characters in the movie end up this way.
