Lowell
During the end of the eighteenth century, the American economy was going through a process known as modernization. The economy of New England was quickly modernized and the “putting out” system caused many women to be unemployed. At the same time, women’s place in society was viewed as being in the home to bear and rear children. This created a conflict for unemployed and unmarried women. They were stuck between the necessity to make money and the outlook that women should be in the home living family centered lives.
