Kate and Petruchio in the Taming of a Shrew
The Taming of a Shrew is a play set in the 1920's that explores the world of Shrew Taming. The play focuses mainly on Petruchio and Kates marriage. During these times, marriages were very much on display to the people. It was depicted more as a ‘public action’” (Dolan, “Ideal” 161). Through an event filled process, Kate and Petruchio’s marriage goes from the taming of a shrew to marriage bliss. Petruchio’s feeling for Kate start with his interest in her money and beauty to courting and taming her to realizing they are actually a lot alike and have fallen in love.
Katharine was a lady of such an ungovernable spirit and fiery temper, such a loud tongued temptress that she was know in Padua by no other name than Katherine the Shrew. The townspeople thought it seemed very unlikely, almost impossible that any man would every be found who would venture to marry this lady.
It just so happened that a gentlemen by the name of Petruchio came to Padua to marry a rich woman, sight unseen. He does not care what she is like as long as she brings him a fortune.
