Identity and Communtiy in Religion
Identity and Community
Identity and community are elements of religion that can be found in Wicca, Reconstructionist Neopaganisms and Online religions. Though these elements may be expressed differently in each of these religions, they all place the same emphasis on finding out who you are and who you can relate to. Followers of these three types of religions hold very different religious beliefs and perform different rituals, but all members link their identity back to their religion. It has become part of who they are. Many Wiccans have found their identity through this religion because they agree with many of the beliefs. Reconstructionist Neopagans, on the other hand, often link their identity back to this religion because of their ancestral ties. Online worshippers, like Wiccans, generally construct their religious identity around similar beliefs. Over time, religions have been accommodated and appropriated to suit the needs of the followers. Some religions have accommodated to outside pressures and changed the way that they express their religious identity, while others have appropriated certain elements that appealed to them and they felt should be a part of their identity.
