    Juvenal Essay In the passage “Satire III” by Juvenal, he is very sarcastic when he criticizes Roman society. Using sarcasm, he reveals lying, selfishness and corruption within the Roman society. By analyzing satires of lying, selfishness and corruption one can begin to see where Juvenal’s values and beliefs lie. One of the first prominent targets presented is selfishness. Umbricius, the character narrating the satire, feels that Rome’s citizens, especially Greeks, are extremely selfish. He states, “No room for honest Romans when Rome’s ruled by a junta of Greek-born secret agents, who – like all their race – never share friends or patrons. One small dose of venom (Half Greek, half personal) dropped in that ready ear and I’m out, shown that back-door, my years of obsequious service all gone for nothing. Where can a hanger-on be ditched with less fuss than in Rome?” Umbricius, here, feels that Greek citizens hold their friends in contempt and if anything bad is heard about one friend, they are tossed aside without explanation.
