Mr. Smith Goes to Washington
In the movie Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, a senator passes away and they must
appoint a new one. When this senator died they had a vacancy. When Mr. Smith came to
Washington the press took pictures and wrote things about him in the news paper. What
they had wrote about him was slander. The press can write anything about that person in
the paper because of Amendment 1, “Freedom of the Press.” When Mr. Smith arrives in
his new office and meets his secretary he want’s to introduce a bill into the senate. When
Senator Payne says “No you can’t build a boys’ camp because a dam is going to be built
there.” Smith gets angry so he goes into the senate room and decides to filibuster on his
bill. The other members of the Senate didn’t want him to get his bill passed because they
think he is a liar so they try to cloture his bill.
When the movie started and the senator passed away, there was a vacancy in the
Senate. They have a couple of choices they can use. One the can have an election to see
who will best fill his or her place. They can pick someone out of nowhere to do the job, or
they can leave the seat empty until the next election. In this case they didn’t leave the
