Legalizing World's Oldest Profession
Mention the three words, “world’s oldest profession”, in a room full of adults and watch the heads turn. The “world’s oldest profession” is a term that is used in polite society for prostitution. Since society has placed this term upon prostitution as a “profession,” the people of the United States need to pass laws making it a legal profession.
Since Biblical times references to prostitution have been made. Ronald Ekerd points out Prostitution in ancient Hebrew society was morally censured but was not illegal. "Do not prostitute thy daughter," says Yahweh in Lev. 19:29, "to cause her to be a whore.”(P).
Prostitution was brought to the United States from Europe. Women were convicts, the homeless, and mothers who found themselves in a new world with no money and no food. They turned to prostitution to survive. Some came to the United States with sailors or adventurers and were already working in the profession. The Puritans, who considered sex a sin even amongst married people, morally judged prostitution.
