How Modern Toy Soldiers/Miniatures are made.
In the old days, toy soldiers were made of lead. They were usually "drop cast" a term used for pouring hot lead into a mold. details were few and the castings were usually crude.
Today's miniature toy soldiers are
no longer contain lead. The alloy is usually at least 70% tin
and can contain many other base metals such as Bismuth, Lead,
Antimony, or rarely Cadmium. A common alloy of 95% tin, 2.5% zinc and 2.5%
copper is what can be found here in the USA.
Another is an alloy of tin, lead, antimony,
bismuth and copper called C90. It's mostly tin, with just a
little bit of lead and traces of other metals to make it more malleable;
it's classed as a Pewter (which is the generic term for most high-tin
alloys). Note that this is for the figures made in the UK - the
ones that can be purchased in the USA are completely a lead-free alloy (which is more
brittle and less bendable).
