NAFTA
What is in it for the Consumer?
What is the North American Free Trade Agreement?
In January of 1994 the United States, Canada, and Mexico entered into what is called NAFTA
(North American Free Treade Agreement.) creating the largest and richest regional trade
agreement ever negotiated by the United States. NAFTA is scheduled to be fully implemented
by the year 2008. Within a two year time period, 1994-1996, the United States two-way
trade in goods under the NAFTA with Canada and Mexico stood at $420 billion: a 44%
increase since the NAFTA was signed.(1)
The key goals for NAFTA are as follows:
1) To reduce barriers to trade.
2) To increase cooperation for improving working conditions in North America
3) To create and expand safe markets for goods and services produced in North
America.
4) To extablish clear and mutually advantageous trade rules.
5) To help develop and expand world trade and provide a broader International
Cooperation in trading.
To answer the question "What is in it for the consumer?" the answer would be "NEED".
Consumers are impacted each day by the NAFTA. They purchase items they need or want.
