Introduction In the United States, women take their rights for granted. Women can walk the streets without a worry about being judged. In businesses, there is no pressure to quit because of children and equal rights along side with men. There are protection laws and wonderful facilities for women and their children. Japanese women do not have the luxury that US women do. Although, the status of the Japanese women has changed considerably since the end of World War II.1 Before the war, the Japanese women were firmly ingrained in an ancestral system.2 They were taught to obey first her father, then her husband, and later her sons.3 The few women who worked outside the home in the prewar period, worked almost exclusively as teachers or nurses, or in other professions considered appropriate for women.4 The status of women in Japan, at least on the surface, changed dramatically.5 The ideal of equality of the sexes was introduced to Japan and written into the new Constitution in the form of the rights to vote, to receive an education, and to receive equal opportunity employment.6 Today, more women work then there has ever been in the history of Japan.7 Although more work, there are still many hardships women go throu
