PHENOTYPIC VARIATIONS IN NATURAL POPULATIONS
INTRODUCTION
Phenotypic plasticity is the ability of an organism’s genotype to display different phenotypes depending on environmental conditions (Aura Fajardo). Variation in phenotypic traits is an important piece of evidence to biologists in that it helps them to identify genetic differences among individuals within a population and between populations of the same species living in different. Recording phenotypic variation, especially those variations that impress upon survival and reproduction lifestyles, aids in studying how populations evolve in response to their ever-changing environments (Biology 102 Lab Manual).
The major purpose of this lab exercise is to measure and describe variations in shell length and width in a local populations of one of two common marine invertebrates, the snail L
