Ping Crosby

    A Pocket Full of Dreams Harry Lillis Crosby, a popular pioneering jazz vocalist, was born on May 3, 1903 in Tacoma, Washington. His friend called him “Bing” because he led the character in a comic strip, “The Bingville Bugle”. In 1920 he attended Gonzaga University to study law, but he later lost interested in law when a band of North Central invited him to give a shot at trying out for the band. With an opportunity, the Musicaladers was accepted by the Pekin, which is a Chinese Restaurant. Although the Musicaladers were aware of the liquors and prostitution in the Pekin, they shill accepted the Pekins offer of performing on a Friday and Saturday night, soon, the Musicaladers broke up in 1925. “He absorbed the influences of performers so diverse that few would have mentioned them in the same sentence, among them, Al Jolson, John McCormack, the Mount City Blue Blowers, Ukelele Ike, Ethel Waters, Mildred Bailey, Van and Schenck, Bix Beiderbeche, and, most decisively, Armstrong” (Giddens 10). With the popularity of a new style of singing on radio, Crosby was determined to become one of them.
