Short Film Analysis: Narrative
The film Lonestar, relies heavily on spatial relations. Writer-director, John Sayles uses specific locations and props to illustrate the main character, Sheriff Sam Deeds’ ongoing attempt to solve a mystery that has been puzzling him about his father. Sayles does this by showing the parallelism between what Sam is suspecting, and then showing what actually happened, without ever interrupting the shot, only focusing on one particular space as either the present or the past is revealed. Personally, I believe that Sayles uses this method, not only to be unique in his work, but to also illustrate how the story unfolds, exactly how close Sam is getting to solving the mystery.
