I read this quote in ESPN Magazine a few months after the Giants lost the World
Series to the Angles last year.
The intentional walk is a big part of the game of baseball. It has been helping
pitchers pitch around tough batters since the beginning of time. The intentional walk is
caused when a batter of out standing capabilities comes to the plate, the pitcher weather
he is great or just good is in a situation where it would be better for him to just walk
the batter of out standing capabilities, rather then take the chance of pitching to him.
The catcher will either take the sign from the manager or the manager will call for time
and talk to the pitcher himself. After everything is clarified, the pitcher will step up to
the mound and look in for the sign. By this point the catcher has already risen from his
