Bio Lab Proteins
Introduction
The word Protein comes from the Greek word “proteins “ meaning first place. Proteins play a significant role in bodily functions. They are used for membrane structure, storage signaling and many more. Proteins are amongst the most complex molecules in body. Since proteins contain benzine rings that would be what the protein test would consist of, NaOH and CuS04 were added to tubes containing various samples, in this test a violet pink color indicated the presence of proteins. But for the benzine HNO3 was added and a yellow color would verify the presence of benzine. The substances to be tested were egg labium, gelatin, milk, and distilled water. The purpose of this would be to qualitatively determine which substances had protein and the specific compound that indicated that protein. The hypotheses was that egg, milk and gelatin would test positive for protein simply because they are from animals and water would not.
As well as Protein, carbohydrates were studied in this experiment. Carbohydrates can be simply defines as sugars. They consist of Carbon, Hydrogen and Oxygen. ‘Carbs’ can be classified as monosaccharide, disaccharides or polysaccharides., depending on the number of sugar molecules contained.
