Phil Edwards was one of the greatest Canadian athletes who ran for Canada. He was the first black McGill athlete. He competed in three Olympics, winning altogether five medals.
Edwards was born in 1907 in Georgetown, British Guyana. His father was a rich magistrate working for the government. He saw his son’s potential at running and became his coach. Edwards wanted to pursue a running career and moved to the United States. He studied at New York University and joined the track team of the school as a middle-distance runner.
