Valentin is a passionate revolutionary political prisoner, and Molina is a homosexual window-dresser, incarcerated for corruption of minors. Molina, the reader learns, has been placed in this cell in attempts to find out information from Valentin to help undermine the revolution. Although Molina is there to deceive Valentin, a very strong bond between the two inmates begins to develop. Molina recounts film plots not only as a way for the two men to pass the time and forget their surroundings in the prison cell. The films represent important events in the lives of the two men that causes them, at least spiritually, to become liberated. They share a reluctant, slow-growing friendship, but eventually become quite close, intimately close.
