A native of Detroit, Michigan Jerry Uelsmann discovered his love and interest in photography during his high school years. Uelsmann received his B.F.A. from the Rochester Institute of Technology in 1957 and his M.S. and M.F.A. from Indiana University in 1960. In 1960, Uelsmann began a career in teaching photography at the University of Florida. Uelsmann has made some great achievements in his time including receiving a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1967, a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in 1972, his work was named one of the ten most collected in the country by American Photographer, and has printed to date five books. Although Uelsmann’s technique is considered sandwiching, that’s not his technique at all.
