Violence Can Be Used as a Tool

    As Jack pummels Angel Face by punching him in the face over and over until all that is left of the poor boy’s mug is a bloody mess, you may think, “What is the point of this senseless violence?” Two seconds later Jack mutters, “I felt like destroying something beautiful.”(Fincher) David Fincher, the director of Fight Club has a way of shocking you will brutal acts of violence throughout the movie and then justifying the reasoning behind all the mayhem with deeper underlying themes. This scene with Angel Face is one of many where film critics may see the violence in the scene as gratuitous and graphic. This is just the way Fincher intended the movies to be, in order to catch the viewers attention. After Fincher catches your attention he then takes you on a ride along the modern day rollercoaster of today’s capitalist society. I believe Fincher uses violence in the movie Fight Club to help him prove his underlying point, that the modern day American man has lost touch with his masculine roots and has become a product of our capitalist society.
