Muybridge and Marey

    Capturing movement in a photographic image was seen impossible to achieve until the late 18th century when a cure for this problem was finally solved. There are five photographers that have made the impact of movement photography and also have contributed their inventions, intelligence and skills to photography today. Eadweard Muybridge and Étienne-Jules Marey are the main contributors however Thomas Eakins and brothers, Louis and Auguste Lumière have in addition assisted in the progression of movement.Eadweard Muybridge (b.1830 d.1904) is the significant founder of human and animal locomotion images, which where then later acknowledged by others. Probably his most famous images of ‘The Horse in Motion’ in the 1872, he photographed Leland Stanford’s horses regarding the positions of the horse’s legs as it is trotting. Muybridge wanted to prove that all four hooves simultaneously are off the ground at one time during the gallop.
