A Psychological Hypothesis About Homophobia

    In reading my psych book this afternoon to prepare for my quiz, I found the featured study rather interesting. It was about how homophobic men tended towards repressed homophobic tendencies. The study featured about 60 men from the University of Georgia. They were given a written test of 25 questions as a determinant of their attitudes towards sexual behavior. About a third of the men displayed latent animosity towards male homosexuality. Then all of the men were exposed to four-minute video clips at intervals containing either heterosexual, homosexual female, or homosexual male behavior. Their arousal responses were measured in both written evaluation and through detection with penile gauges. While all the men showed similar arousal to heterosexual and lesbian activity, the responses were quite different for the male homosexual video. The homophobic men showed a much greater arousal to the homosexual male video than the non-homophobic men. (This is, obviously, is based on the penile gauge readings. The written evaluation of the homophobic men denied any arousal at all.) My piqued interest is a result of a number of things, but mainly because I feel very strongly for the rights of homosexuals.
