Does ‘religion’ have meaning outside of ‘Religious Studies’?
In 1887, Fredreich Nietzsche (1844-1900) claimed that God was dead - we had killed Him by our indifference. Since the time of his statement, the number of people (particularly in the West) living their lives in reference to God has rapidly declined. However, although we may now live ‘after God’, we do still make substantial use of religion in our everyday lives. Religion does have a significant role outside of what we study as academics, in fact, our daily existence revolves around some form of relation to religion. This may be due to the relationship between religion and politics, which inevitably affects everyone, ignorant or not of this fact. In today’s post-modern society, there is reference to religion everywhere we turn. Pop-culture – including popular music, advertising, language and media - abound with religious imagery, references, terms and themes. It is important to note, that religion is not necessarily limited to institutional forms. Rather, it encompasses many varied belief systems, spiritualities and aspects of faith, from belief in a universal life-force, to expressions of unconditional conviction towards deity, to a simple act and what it stands for – such as setting a rock, feather, candle and bowl of
