Discuss the role of technology in Metropolis
The film Metropolis was made in 1927 by Fritz Lang. It was based 100 years from when the movie was made-2027. Visually the film was very architectural, creating an atmosphere through expressionistic symbolic sets, special lighting and cleaver editing. The lines and shapes of the futuristic cityscapes are distorted in a traditional German expressionistic style. The film was a science fiction spectacle that was made way ahead of its time, dealing with a robot like society controlled by superindustrialists. The film is silent so relies on innovative visual imagery. Technology plays a big and important role in the film.
The opening scene of the film shows how important technology is to metropolis. After the opening title ‘Metropolis’ appears, large buildings and towers appear revealing a large city, this then morphs into:
"The machines of metropolis, gigantic pyramidal pistons moving slowly up and down, wheels turning, electrical insulators, rods and gleaming shafts, cams and winding gears, the slow moving cogs of a great machine, the valve gear of a vast steam chest moving slowly too and fro, more slow moving cogs and wheels superimposed which then dissolve…"
