The Atomic Bomb
The Second World War ended with an atomic bomb being dropped on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. These events killed tens of thousands of people, injured many, and demolished both cities. For the first time, the world knew that science could be enlisted to produce catastrophic ends without a full comprehension of long-term consequences. The American President, Harry Truman, felt the atomic bomb would solve the problem of ending the Pacific War. Truman saw it as a way to save his people while getting rid of the enemy at the same time.
When the Japanese attacked the Americans at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, the Americans were devastated. They had been attacked on their homeland and were greatly affected by this attack. They immediately went to war with its’ Allies, against the Japanese in battles such as the Battle of Midway (1942). They were not going to settle for anything less than unconditional surrender from the Japanese. Soon, they began to see that the Japanese were not about to let this happen and the Americans felt that they needed to end the war as soon as possible.
