Freud and Civilization
Born Sigismund Schlomo Freud on May 6, 1856 no one could have known that the child would grow to become one the most influential figures of the twentieth century. Freud was born in the town of Freiberg once apart of Austria but now lying inside the Czech Republic. In 1860 the family would relocate to Vienna, a historical center in Europe for cutting edge thought in the arts, academics, politics, and science. Freud was formally educated in Vienna in classical literature and philosophy, disciplines that would doubtlessly influence his future work. Freud would have an impact on the field of psychology with his theories on psycho-analysis that would span the twentieth century and continue on into the present where his ideas are still hotly contested. Throughout his career Freud was on the frontier of the blossoming field of psycho-analysis and his ideas would profoundly influence the way educated people world-wide would conceptualize sexuality, memory, and childhood development.
