Entertainment of the 1930s

    The American people used entertainment to escape from the hardships of the 1930s. The tunes of music and variety of radio shows allowed the public to enjoy life. Many forms of literature helped the people to relax. The surreal worlds of cinema and theater let Americans escape the troubles of their lives. Entertainment in the 1930s served an important role to the American public. Music in the 1930s revolved almost completely around jazz and swing tunes. During weekends and even after work or school, radios all over the United States were turned on to give musical satisfaction. Girls and boys alike would dance the jitterbug or other popular swing moves to such songs as gBlueberry Hill,h gCareless,h gGod Bless America,h gIndian Summer,h gOh Johnny,h and gSouth of the Border.h With many popular artists such as Martha Tilton, Helen OfConnel, Billie Holiday, Mildred Barley, Marrion Hutton and Ella Fitzgerald, there was a large selection of styles from which to choose. The sole meaning of music in the 1930s was summed up in Duke Ellingtonfs song, gIt Donft Mean a Thing If It Ainft Got Swingh (Sutton 9).
